Abstract

This chapter examines arrangements for public funding and provision of long-term care services for older people within the countries of western, southern, and eastern Europe and Scandinavia - broadly, the member countries of the enlarged European Union (EU). However, both long-term care policy developments as well as published English-language research and policy analysis are considerably more extensive in some of these countries than in others.

First, the demographic and economic context of long-term care in Europe is described. Secondly, the different approaches to the funding and provision of long-term care within the countries of Europe are summarised. Thirdly, the chapter discusses some emergent common themes that appear to characterise policies in at least some European countries. The chapter concludes with a brief discussion of the potential for greater convergence between countries, given the supranational status of the EU.
