Research review of risk and adult social care: focused update

Background

During 2007, the Social Policy Research Unit conducted a review of research evidence on perceptions and management of risk amongst users of adult social care services. In order to inform a new programme of work on Risk, Regulation, Rights and Responsibilities, the Joseph Rowntree Foundation (JRF) has commissioned a focused update of this review to capture research that has been published more recently on a number of specific issues. 

Aims

This update aims to identify empirical research conducted and published within the UK since 2007 (and, to a limited extent, currently in progress). It aims particularly to identify recent evidence on:

• social care service users’ and carers’ (paid and unpaid) experiences and perspectives on risk, including perspectives on the balances between taking risks and protection from risk 
• the effectiveness of mechanisms to prevent or reduce risk
• experiences, incidence and the management of risk arising from more personalised approaches to delivering adult social care.

Policy and practice implications

The review aims to inform a new programme of work by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation on Risk, Regulation, Rights and Responsibilities.
