The well-being of children in the UK

Researchers: Jonathan Bradshaw (with contributions from all sections of the Department of Social Policy & Social Work)

Funder: Save the Children

Duration: March 2001 to March 2006

Save the Children commissioned the Department to write a biennial report on the State of Children in the UK.

The first report was published in 2002 and the second edition in 2005. This project drew on the expertise that exists in the wider Social Policy and Social Work Department at the University of York on children. Twenty three chapters covering different aspects of the physical, cognitive, behavioural and emotional well-being of children. The project aimed to provide a comprehensive picture of how children are doing, how their well-being varies within the countries of the UK and by gender, age, ethnicity, family type and level of income. The impact of poverty was one focus but not the only focus.

The research team was led by Jonathan Bradshaw in the Department of Social Policy and Social Work and involved academic staff from that Department including the SPRU; the Centre for Housing Policy and SPRU. Staff from other Departments at the University with interest in children were also associated with the project.

A third edition was published in 2011. ChiMat (Child and Maternal Health Observatory) made a contribution towards the expenses of the volume, which was published by the Policy Press.
