Roles and expectations: a qualitative study exploring the roles and expectations within a primary health care team
Researchers: Hilary Arksey
Funder: The Health Care Practice
Duration: March 2004 to August 2004
Aims
- To investigate how the roles of primary care professionals are understood and viewed by members of a primary health care team.
- To identify any areas where there are inconsistencies or inaccuracies in understandings of professional roles.
- Where problems were identified, to inform how work to improve understandings of professional roles might be undertaken in order to enhance team working and patient care.
Methodology
Information and data was collected in a variety of ways, namely:
- Self-completion audit by all staff of a typical week's activities and interactions with others prior to interview, for personal use only.
- Interviews with all members of staff. The aim of the interviews was to gain in-depth understandings of how people perceive their own roles, and also other team members' roles.
- Full practice meeting to focus on how best to take forward the study findings so as to enhance team working and improve patient care.
Findings
The findings of the research were presented to the Practice involved, their Primary Care Trust, and health research organisations.
