Health Service Research

YHEC was originally established to provide health economic support to NHS organisations and this continues to account for a significant proportion of our work. Our applied health services research experience includes service reviews and evaluations at both a local and national level, covering a wide range of interventions and policy initiatives. These projects have helped to inform policy making at both a national and local level in areas including public health (e.g. alcohol misuse, physical activity, smoking cessation), patient safety, telehealth and telecare, learning disabilities, and children with life-limiting conditions.

Our service reviews and evaluations are carried out by multi-disciplinary teams capable of providing a range of skills and capabilities, including:

  • Targeted literature reviews
  • Analysis of activity data (national, such as Hospital Episodes Statistics, or that collected locally) to investigate aspects such as referral rates, treatment pathways and health services expenditure
  • Administration of electronic (and/or hard-copy) questionnaires and surveys which capture both qualitative and quantitative data
  • Qualitative research, such as workshops, focus groups and one-to-one interviews
  • Costing models of service delivery

YHEC has worked with a wide range of NHS providers and commissioners to help inform decisions on the efficient use of NHS resources.

Typical activities include:

  • Health technology assessment
  • Cost-effectiveness analyses
  • Needs assessment exercises, to help identify gaps between current provision and needs across a population
  • Cost/Burden of illness studies
  • Benchmarking of performance, cost and activity against national standards or international best practice to identify opportunities for more efficient use of resources
  • Options appraisals for potential re-configurations of local services
  • Policy analysis
  • Economic analyses with clinical trials
