 John Hutton is Director of YHEC and Professor of Health Economics in the Department of Health Sciences at the University of York. John is an experienced health economist who has spent time in academia, the public sector and healthcare consulting. His experience lies in technology and policy evaluation projects with NHS and pharmaceutical and medical device industry clients. He was a founding co-editor of Health Economics and has published extensively on methods of economic evaluation and its application in a wide range of disease areas, especially cardiovascular disease and cancer. In addition to this, he has worked with NICE and other European HTA bodies in developing their evaluation systems and has taken an active role in NHS management, as a Non-Executive Director of York Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and MEDIPEX, the Yorkshire and Humber NHS innovation hub. In 2009 he became a member of a NICE Technology Appraisal Committee. Publications:

Julie coordinates YHEC's information and review services to customers who require literature searches and reviews of all types ranging from rapid reviews to systematic reviews to inform submissions to reimbursement agencies such as NICE. Julie also coordinates YHEC's training programme. Julie is a co-convenor of the Cochrane Information Retrieval Methods Group and a member of the Advisory Board of the UK Cochrane Centre
Before joining YHEC Julie was Associate Director and Information Service Manager at the Centre for Reviews and Dissemination (CRD) at the University of York for fourteen years. In this role Julie managed information support for systematic reviews and technology assessments within CRD and to external customers. She also managed the production of the NHS EED database and CRD's database production and publication infrastructure. Julie's research interests are in search filter design and appraisal, the efficient identification of research evidence for systematic reviews, economic evaluations and models and health technology assessments. Nick Hex has recently joined YHEC as a Project Director and is a qualified accountant (Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy). He worked at Audit Scotland for seven years where he led teams carrying out value for money reviews of the NHS and the wider public sector in Scotland. Nick's reviews have involved qualitative and quantitative techniques to examine efficiency and productivity, including benchmarking, data and survey analysis, interviewing and focus groups. His published NHS reports have included productivity analysis in areas such as day surgery, asset management, the use of locum doctors and a costed evaluation of the free personal and nursing care policy in Scotland. Nick also has extensive experience of evaluating governance and leadership arrangements and he recently published a major review of the effectiveness of public sector boards in Scotland. Prior to joining Audit Scotland, Nick worked for the Audit Commission in England, reviewing GP and hospital prescribing management arrangements, diabetes care, CAMHS and NHS supplies. Publications:

Dr Matthew Taylor is Deputy Director of YHEC. Matthew has a Ph.D. degree in health outcomes research and an M.Sc. in Health Economics from the University of York, and has worked for YHEC since 2003. Matthew is the YHEC lead for health technology assessment and economic evaluations of pharmaceutical technologies. He leads a number of teams undertaking economic evaluations for NICE, SMC and AWMSG industry submissions as well as health technology submissions in various international settings. Whilst he is primarily involved with working on economic models, Matthew has also undertaken numerous model adaptations, cost-of-illness studies, quality of life research, systematic literature reviews and theoretical research for clients in both the private and public sectors. Dr Taylor also teaches on the University’s Distance Learning course, and leads a number of health economics training courses at YHEC, including “Early Modelling: Using Models to Inform Drug and Device Development” and “Understanding and Critiquing Economic Models”. Joyce joined YHEC as a Project Director in 2009 from NHS Quality Improvement Scotland where she was Lead Health Economist. She has also worked in a heavily regulated private sector company (BAA Ltd) and with the energy regulator, Ofgem. She thus has a breadth of experience in economic regulation, together with the commissioning and evaluation of services, including drugs and devices. Her particular interests include working with the Service to implement new methods of working.
Joyce has a first degree in economics, a MSc in Accounting and Finance and a MBA. She brings an extensive knowledge of economic and accounting theory and its application. Publications:
